The future of televisions goes through the 8K
Samsung and LG take the battle of high resolution screens to homes
It was confirmed. In the absence of smartphones, the protagonists in this IFA in Berlin are televisions. A market that this summer has grown around 25% thanks to the World Cup in Russia and with a common denominator: 55-inch screens are preferred. "The screens are growing," says a Samsung executive at Innova + in Berlin.
A growth that the market expects in 2025 to reach 70 inches and these screens are those that reign in homes around the world. "The market is turning to screens over 65 inches," they say from Samsung.
LG's commitment goes further and they expect to have 5 million units of televisions in the market. However, the price is one of the big unknowns and could be around 5,000-15,000 euros for the screens recently presented by Samsung, according to Innova +.
At present, 75 "TVs are growing at 100% compared to previous periods and" from 55 inches, the pixels are larger and more resolution is needed, "market experts point out. This leads to 8K televisions that have 32 million pixels , in the case of OLED 8K LG reach 33 million. Very far figures of Full HD of 2 million pixels.
What does this mess of figures mean? A pixel is a square or rectangular point that uses the computer language to define the smallest part of a screen, so this news is reading about a set of pixels. So the more pixels, the higher the resolution, that is, more detail and visual information. In the words of Samsung, «emit the perfect reality».
Artificial intelligence
Although it may seem lie, artificial intelligence is the key also in televisions and not to make a television grill to the taste of the viewer. Today talking about 4K in Spain is a dream.
At the moment, these contents in 3840x2160 pixels are offered by Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or pay television through Vodafone and Orange. Spanish DTT? A dream, only TVE broadcasts its 4K channel.
And how you get to 8K without these contents, the answer is artificial intelligence . While awaiting the arrival of native content in 7680x4320 pixels, the great technology take advantage of the scaling.
"OLED technology has been defined from the outset as the next technological generation in screens, based on the self-luminescence of its pixels and eliminating the need for any kind of back lighting," explains LG who has also brought an 8K TV to Berlin. .
Thanks to this technology and algorithms, the industry prepares for the landing of giant screens equipped with state-of-the-art intelligent chips.
Samsung has equipped its new televisions with the Quantum Processor 8K that does not incorporate an algorithm, but "256 non-fixed". Thanks to this system, the artificial intelligence behind these panels will improve the images in 8K and without needing to be connected to the network.
"The first 8K OLED TV is a milestone in the field of screen technology and represents its evolution," says Brian Kwon, president of LG Home Entertainment. A jump inside the image that produces a 3D sensation.
In addition, the Samsung Q900R features Direct Full Array Elite technology for better contrast and precise backlight control .
The TV reproduces 100% color volume, allowing users to appreciate billions of color shades and maximum color accuracy achieved to date.
Immersive experience
A jump also of quality, since they are passed of the 1080p of resolution of the FullHD (1920x1080 pixels with progressive exploration), the most used in the Spanish homes, to the 7680x4320 pixels of the 8K. An immersion that Innova + has proven and where artificial intelligence is able to climb to the smallest detail.
In addition, they raise the nits, that is, the amount of light emitted in a certain area up to 4,000 on 85-inch screens. This means that there is more brightness in the image transferring "the perfect reality to the viewer," according to the South Korean company.
Samsung brings in October to Spain, the first 8K televisions in three versions 65, 75 and 85 inches. The brand has also revealed the prices of its new screens: 4,999 euros for the 65-inch version, 6,999 euros for the 75- inch version and, finally, the largest one will reach 14,999 euros . For its part, LG will bring its 8K to Spain in September 2019 and include LED and OLED models of 88 and 75 inches.
The focus is undoubtedly on the Olympic Games in Tokyo to be held in 2020, there talking about 8K is normal. The Japanese network NHK even issued Rio's 2016 in this resolution.
New models in Europe
The Wall, a last generation Micro LED screen designed for corporate and outdoor environments, arrived last year at the German fair and this year returns with the announcement of the landing in the European market. A monitor "fully customizable to give users the freedom to decide how to incorporate the screen in their spaces," says the company.
Samsung also introduces a new model of 49 "for the family of televisions The Frame and Easy Discovery, which provides users with access to specially selected artworks that will be displayed on the screen without having to choose from hundreds of options.
