Facebook will build its first data center in Asia in Singapore

The center will be built in the west of the city-state and once completed will occupy 170,000 square meters in a building of eleven floors and will allow to create "hundreds of jobs"

Facebook today announced the construction of a data center in Singapore, the first that the technology giant will have in Asia, for which it plans to invest around 1,000 million dollars.

The center will be built in the west of the city-state and once completed will occupy 170,000 square meters in a building of eleven floors and will create "hundreds of jobs," the social network said in a statement.

The company expects the new facility to start operations from 2022.

"Our data centers are highly advanced facilities that help bring Facebook applications and services to people around the world every day," Facebook said in a statement.

Facebook's vice president of data center infrastructures, Thomas Furlong, justified the choice of Singapore for "its robust infrastructure, access to fiber, the training of the local workforce and the support of government agencies."

In the presentation ceremony, Furlong said that Facebook has a thousand employees in Singapore and promotes programs to help the growth of local emerging companies, according to the newspaper Straits Times.

The center will be in the same area where in early August Google announced the construction of its third data center in Singapore to meet the growing demand for its Google Cloud Platform service, generated by the increase in mobile phone users and of companies that operate online in the region.
